About Us
Project Rebound at Cal State LA is a community-rooted program championing the academic and personal growth of formerly incarcerated students. Founded in 1967 by Professor John Irwin at San Francisco State University, we’ve branched out with the unwavering belief that education transforms lives. Staffed by individuals with firsthand experiences navigating the justice system, we understand how vital it is to stand firm in your commitments—even when challenges arise.
We believe in turning yesterday’s setbacks into tomorrow’s momentum. Time and again, we’ve witnessed how this program fosters transformation in students who dedicate themselves to a path of higher learning. While our focus is always on collective progress, those who hold true to our shared values shine brightest—reminding everyone that loyalty, integrity, and unity still mean something in this ever-shifting world.
In an environment often shaped by difficult histories, our commitment helps dismantle barriers and provides a powerful alternative to the repetitive cycles of the justice system. Success here doesn’t just change the course of one life—it uplifts entire communities.
Why You Should Care
Project Rebound bridges opportunity and action. Education may seem like a simple door to open, but it becomes a beacon for those ready to stay the course. When we uplift each other—especially those who’ve known hardship—everyone benefits.
Safer, Stronger Communities: Graduates give back, mentor others, and offer compassion forged by their experiences.
Equity & Inclusion: Removing barriers to education is the first step in honoring every voice.
Hope & Transformation: Success blossoms where second chances are nurtured, reminding us that no journey is set in stone.

Join Us and Rise
We extend a hand to those who remain steadfast and those who may have once strayed—our door remains open. Project Rebound is more than a place to study; it’s a testament to how we treat one another when the stakes are highest. Take a stand for your own future, or partner with us to help others find their path to self-empowerment.
Be part of our story. Let’s build a legacy where every step forward honors the lessons of the past—and where unity guides us all to greater heights.
Project Rebound: Honoring Our Roots, Forging Our Future
Project Rebound exemplifies a collective journey toward empowerment and renewal. Guided by the principle of Sankofa—looking to our past to build a brighter tomorrow—we stand together in unity, holding tight to the core values that shaped us and continue to guide us forward.
Our Story
Born from a vision of possibility, Project Rebound has always been about second chances, resilience, and the promise that no one’s past should limit their future. We honor the legacy of those who came before us—our elders, teachers, and trailblazers—whose perseverance and wisdom fuel our collective mission.
What We Do
At our heart, we are a hub of support and advocacy, clearing pathways to higher education and self-empowerment. We strive to foster a space where every individual feels seen, heard, and respected—where academic success, leadership development, and community engagement intersect to transform lives.
- Holistic Support: We provide resources and mentoring that uplift every aspect of our members’ lives, reinforcing the idea that personal growth happens when mind, body, and spirit are nurtured.
- Collaborative Community: We partner with local organizations, educational institutions, and individuals who share our commitment to unity. Our network is built on trust, inclusivity, and a pledge to leave no one behind.
- Cultural Affirmation: Rooted in the philosophy of Sankofa, we reach back to honor our shared experiences and heritage, using the lessons of yesterday to empower us today.
Our Values
Unity: We believe in the power of standing together, celebrating our collective strengths, and moving as one toward our common goals.
Respect: We recognize the dignity of every person, honoring their story and perspective as essential threads in our community tapestry.
Integrity: We remain devoted to our mission, drawing wisdom from our past to uphold the highest standards of honesty, accountability, and care.
Resilience: We learn from challenges—both shared and individual—and carry those lessons forward with unwavering determination.
Looking Ahead
Even as we grow and evolve, our commitment to each other remains unshaken. We hold fast to the bonds formed by a deep sense of purpose and mutual respect. With every new milestone, we pause to remember where we started, thankful for all who have walked alongside us—past and present.
Join us in this continuing journey. Together, we embody the spirit of Sankofa, stepping boldly into the future without losing sight of the powerful foundation that shaped us. May our unity light the path forward for generations to come.
Project Rebound: Where every story is honored, every voice counts, and every new step reflects the wisdom of the past. We rise, together.
