America Reads and America Counts
America Reads and America Counts is a tutoring program that trains teams of Cal State LA students from many different disciplines to work directly with K-6 grade students to improve reading and math proficiency skills at one of six of our partner LAUSD schools. Tutors provide one-on-one support with students, guide group work, and and facilitate class activities. America Reads and Counts tutors develop their leadership skills while helping young students transform and aspire to higher education while experiencing math and reading are fun! All eligible America Reads and Counts tutors are compensated through Federal Work Study.

College Corps
#CaliforniansForAll College Corps is a statewide service and career development program that provides students with financial support and professional experience. Fellows are paired with local non-profits that focus on pressing issues in Los Angeles while also learning key skills that will advance their own academic and career success.
Service-Learning
Service-learning at Cal State LA connects classroom learning with real-world community service, allowing students to gain practical experience that enhances their understanding of key concepts, knowledge, and principles taught in class.
Key aspects of service-learning:
- Students participate in learning experiences outside the classroom that help them understand and apply the information, knowledge and theoretical principles explored in class.
- Service-learning combines academic learning with community service projects, addressing needs identified by the local or global communities.
- Students reflect on how what they learn in class connects to their community service work. This reflection helps students build a sense of social responsibility and strengthens their commitment to making positive changes in society.
The Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good helps faculty incorporate service-learning into their courses and supports students in finding community involvement opportunities that align with their studies.
